2012 UPPDA Postdoctoral Advocate Award Winner

Darlene F. Zellers, MA, is the director of the Office of Academic Career Development (OACD), Health Sciences; director of the newly established Center for Postdoctoral Affairs in the Health Sciences; and associate dean for postdoctoral affairs in the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. In her leadership role with the OACD, she is responsible for developing professional career development programs and services for biomedical scientists and clinicians within the University’s six schools of the health sciences. The OACD serves the University’s academic health science community, including graduate and medical students, postdoctoral fellows, residents, clinical fellows, and faculty at every level of experience, by providing full-spectrum academic career development guidance, training, and support. With regard to postdoctoral affairs, she is additionally responsible for overseeing postdoctoral training and professional career development across the schools of the health sciences. Darlene joined the University of Pittsburgh in 1995 as director of the Office of Summer Sessions and Continuing Education, and, in 1997, became associate dean of continuing education and summer programs in the College of General Studies. She previously held administrative posts at the Community College of Allegheny County and Duquesne University. Throughout Darlene’s career, she has held leadership roles in continuing education professional organizations, has been recognized by the College Board Office of Adult Learning Services as a leading practitioner in continuing education, and has received national awards for academic program development and marketing. She has published in the fields of continuing higher education and professional career development. Darlene earned her BS in individual and family studies from the Pennsylvania State University and her MA in administration and policy studies from the University of Pittsburgh, where she is currently a PhD candidate in higher education administration.

2012 UPPDA Postdoctoral Alumni Award

Aaron W. Bell, PhD, is an assistant professor in the Division of Experimental Pathology. He received his BS in Biochemistry & Biophysics from the University of Pittsburgh in 1991, after which he worked for 4 years as a research technician in the Pathology Department at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. Enjoying his work and wanting to go further, he entered the graduate program and received his PhD in Cellular & Molecular Pathology in 1999, working on the role of Hepatocyte Growth Factor in liver development and cancer under the mentorship of Dr. Reza Zarnegar. From 1999 to 2004 he performed his postdoctoral training in the Laboratory of Dr. George Michalopoulos in the Pathology department. During his postdoctoral training, Dr. Bell was a champion for postdoctoral rights and was a founding member and senior Vice-Chair of the University of Pittsburgh Postdoctoral Association. In 2004 he was promoted to Research Assistant professor. He is currently an assistant professor and Director of the Pathology Postdoctoral Research Training Program (PPRTP), which helps fund and direct promising postdocs in their rise to independent research careers. Dr. Bell's research interest lies in understanding the role of transcription factors in control and regulation of liver growth, regeneration and differentiation. His studies focus on how growth factors, extra-cellular matrix and chemicals alter the transcriptional program and affect cellular differentiation and fate. Of particular interest are the liver-enriched transcription factors, especially Hepatic Nuclear Factor-4, a key liver transcription factor required for liver development and function.
