The mission of the International Committee is to make international postdocs feel supported, celebrated, and connected. We want Pitt to feel like home for our international postdocs, since moving across borders isn’t easy, while reinforcing that their presence brings the richness of diverse perspectives, traditions, and stories that strengthen our community. As Chair, I want our committee to be both a support system and a place for fun. We want to plan events that celebrate cultural diversity like international food socials, festival gatherings, and storytelling nights. Additionally, we’ll try to explore informal networking hours, an international postdoc podcast series, and buddy systems for new arrivals, so that postdocs can connect no matter where they are. We also recognize the serious issues such as navigating visas, careers, and adapting to U.S. academic culture. For this, we’ll aim to host info-sessions with experts, mentorship meet-ups, and advocacy conversations to ensure international postdocs are not just welcomed but heard and represented. If you enjoy building friendships across cultures, love sharing ideas, or want to be part of an energetic team making a difference, we’d love to have you. Whether you’re international or not, your participation will help us create a vibrant, inclusive community where every voice belongs.

Tips on preparing your tax return.
International postdocs are subject to U.S. federal and state tax laws. However, residents of certain countries may be exempt from U.S. taxes or receive other benefits due to tax treaties. Those who intend to pay taxes in the U.S. typically have the same automatic tax withholding as employee postdocs. On the other hand, tax-exempt postdocs may or may not have taxes withheld based on their appointment and institution. For more information, click here.
